Tenerife - 10.06.2015 - A sizeable delegation from the island, led by Cabildo president Carlos Alonso, travelled to Paris for the crucial meeting of the UN body's Man and Biosphere Coordination Council and make the final pitch to secure Biosphere recognition for Anaga. Formally known as the Macizo de Anaga, the 49,000 hectare reserve (2,000 hectare core) extends across three municipalities - Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Tegueste - and is located in the north-east of Tenerife. It includes both terrestrial and marine zones and is known for its diversity of reptiles, birds and fish. Anaga is constantly held up by the island authorities as a shining example of how locals and the unspoilt environment live in perfect harmony. A delighted Alonso said the Unesco distinction will bring a massive boost to the area and enhance even further its attractiveness for visitors. The Cabildo chief surprised the Paris gathering by reporting that US President Barack Obama celebrated American Independence Day last year with a glass of wine made in Anaga.
