Oil giant confirms 'no return' decision
Spanish oil giant Repsol has confirmed that it has no plans to return to drill for oil in the Canaries despite still having time on the permits controversially granted by the Ministry of Energy.

Canary Islands - 01.09.2015 - As reported here extensively, the firm carried out exploratory drilling off Lanzarote and Fuerteventura over a 7-week period at the end of last year, despite fierce opposition from the island and regional authorities and a massive public campaign to halt the search for oil on environmental grounds. Although Repsol departed in January after failing to find viable deposits if oil or gas, fears remained that the drill ships could return at any time and begin the hunt in another of the areas for which it had received permission. However, company sources confirmed yesterday that. even though the licences last until March 2016, it will not be returning to the Canaries. The news was immediately welcomed by the president of the Canaries, Fernando Clavijo, who said it cleared up any confusion still surrounding the possibility of an oil industry here.
