Canary Islands - 19.02.2016 - The mass of cold air currently hovering over the Canaries brought downpours to many parts yesterday, with north Tenerife and the island's capital Santa Cruz particularly badly hit. Several areas suffered major flooding accompanied by winds of up to 90 kmh for much of the day. Even normally rain-free islands such as Fuerteventura were not spared the general drenching, with La Oliva in the north getting some of its heaviest rain in recent times. The conditions were even worse in very high parts of Gran Canaria, where the authorities took the decision to ban vehicles from accessing the summits due to the perils posed by sleet and sub-zero temperatures and the risk that visitors heading to see the snow on peaks would become stranded. Among incidents reported during yesterday's torrential rain in Tenerife, police had to go to the aid of a family whose house became isolated due to rushing waters from the adjoining ravine in the Maria Jiménez part of the capital. Also in Tenerife a secondary school in La Victoria has been closed following a wall collapse caused by subsidence during the heavy rain. In Puerto de la Cruz, rushing water and debris led to the closure of one of the two main roads into the town. The bad weather is expected to continue throughout the week-end the Met Office warns.
