The world of opera in the Canaries is in mourning following the death of Francisco Kraus, the elder brother of the islands' most famous voice, Alfredo.

Canary Islands - 29.02.2016 - The 89-year-old baritone passed away at the week-end and tributes have been flooding for the lesser known but highly gifted Kraus sibling, who like his younger brother (who died in 1999) graced opera stages for many decades. Indeed, many credit Francisco for opening the way for tenor Alfredo by leaving his native Gran Canaria to take up the study of opera singing in Barcelona and later in Milan. He made his debut in December 1960 in the Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste, with a role in Khovantchina by Moussorgski and spent many years in Venezuela in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a music teacher in the Caracas Conservatory before returning to Spain to set up the Foundation he ran with Alfredo, by now a world star. His last public performance was in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1996, where he was awarded the Gold Medal of the City.
