The official announcement that the undersea volcano that emerged a short distance off El Hierro in 2012 has been given a name has sparked fury among the island's authorities.

El Hierro - 01.06.2016 - The Spanish Hydrographic Institute announced yesterday that it had chosen the name Tagoro for the unique volcano, which emerged after a long series of undersea eruptions which made the smallest of the Canary Islands the focus of world scientific interest at the time and also led to the evacuation of local residents. Within hours of the announcement, the president of the island's Cabildo Belen Allende gave a press conference to express the authorities' anger that El Hierro had not even been consulted on the name. "We were the ones who suffered from the eruptions and from the lack of knowledge demonstrated by experts at the time, yet we were not even asked to give an opinion on the name. This shows once again the massive divorce that exists between scientists and the community" said Allende, adding that a consultation would have helped the people of El Hierro feel part of the process, particularly bearing in mind that the volcano is just two miles off the coast of La Restinga. However, her furious reaction has drawn criticism even in the Canaries, with some arguing that the name is a very local one and that in itself indicates that the Hydrographic Institute was sensitive to the island's views. Others have mocked Allende by urging her to "call a referendum on the name to keep herself occupied".
