07.01.2017 - The thefts have taken places in different parts of the island, including La Matanza, Santa Cruz, Güímar, La Orotava, Buenavista del Norte and Arona.  The thieves steal the fruits and offer them at lower than usual prices to restaurants and shops. In addition, they steal agricultural machinery and equipment and damage doors and fences on the affected farms.

The avocado farmers who are currently setting up an association in which standards are also established, warn the establishments not to buy stolen goods as this is punishable.  However, the origin of the fruit cannot be proved with a simple check.   Worse still, the thieves do not know when they were last fertilised or injected, which could potentially lead to a health hazard for consumers.
