31 arrests in the south of Tenerife for tourist swindle
The National Police have arrested 31 members of a gang, mainly from the Hindu community, and one Pakistani, for swindling €1.5 million from tourists in an organised manner in the south of Tenerife. The victims were attracted to their businesses by the extremely low prices they were offering.

11.01.2017 - The tourists, who paid for goods with their credit cards, fell into the trap.  After they had left, their payment was taken several times more from the point of sale terminals the business owners had acquired.  The customers were first told that the first attempt at taking the payment had not worked.

Over a thousand holidaymakers were affected in over 15 bazaars in tourist areas of the south of Tenerife, mainly in Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje.   In the first wave of arrests, 10 businessmen were detained who had bought a point of sale terminal and opened an account for it, and later their accomplices and receivers, who also had terminals.  The victims did not make any complaints while they were on the island, as they were already back in their own countries when they discovered the multiple deductions from their accounts.  To most of them, the idea of reporting the problem from there appeared to be probably too cumbersome and hopeless.  Thanks to an attentive bank manager in Gran Canaria, where the gang also operated, the fraudulent machine registrations were discovered.
