Orca study at Loro Parque
Scientists from the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego are currently investigating the hearing capacity of the six Orca whales at the Loro Parque. Brain waves are recorded by means of electrodes on the head, which show their response to a sound. This audiogram method has already been successfully applied by the scientists to dolphins.
The tests would help assess the extent to which the animals are disturbed by man-made noise in the world's oceans. The results could also be applied to other whales, such as fin whales and humpback whales.
