Attempted insurance fraud
Guardia Civil officers based in La Orotava recently investigated a 41-year-old local resident for alleged attempted insurance fraud. The man had claimed that on July 26, strangers had entered his home through a terrace door and stolen valuables, including computers, tablets, photos and videos. The supposed perpetrators then simply left with a house key that they found in the apartment. In total, he estimated the value of the stolen goods to be around €17,000.
Officers found that there was no sign of a break-in, and that the alleged victim had sold the 'stolen items' himself, in a secondhand shop. He had also taken out home insurance against theft, which covered €20,000, only a month and a half ago. The case has been passed to the court in La Orotava.
