Crew evacuated from British cargo ship
A British cargo ship, the Cheshire, which was on its way from Norway to Thailand, suffered a fire on Sunday around 60 nautical miles off Arguineguín in southern Gran Canaria. The ship was carrying fertilisers based on ammonium nitrate and copper. On Sunday it had taken up a safe position ready to stop off in Gran Canaria to refuel. Due to the high temperatures, smoke started coming from the freight areas. Contrary to the first reports of a ship in flames, it turned out that it was only a smoke cloud, triggered by a chemical reaction.

16.08.2017 - The 24 crew members were evacuated by the Canarian lifeboat crew on board Punta Salina.  The freighter was secured and is currently being monitored at a safe distance from the coast by the Canarian coast guard and the sea rescue services.  The conditions inside the ship are currently unknown.  The arrival of a specialist company is expected, which will assess what has happened, what damage has been done, and whether the ship can continue on its journey.
