Lanzarote refugee tragedy: seven dead
Seven dead - this is the sad result of an attempt to reach the coast of Lanzarote. A total of 27 people up to 30 years of age, including some minors, tried to reach Playa Bastián in Costa Teguise on their rickety boat on Monday. Seven did not survive. Apparently, some of the Moroccan refugees left the boat several hundred metres off the coast to swim to the shore. Only 20 of them reached the safety of dry land. Two are in critical condition in hospital. At least seven drowned.
The possibility has not been ruled out that there could have been more deaths that are not yet accounted for. Lanzarote's island president, Pedro San Gines, called a minute's silence for the victims at noon on Tuesday.
