Would-be migrants' departure thwarted
National Police officers based in Mauritania as part of an international cooperation team have intercepted 18 people between the ages of 20 and 30 years who intended to travel to the Canary Islands in a fishing boat. Most of them came from Senegal and one each from Mauritania, Guinea and Bangladesh. The latter, who had a valid residence and work permit issued in Kuwait, came to Mauritania in August and is accused of promoting irregular immigration. The migrants had united in an apartment in Nouadhibou and had been taken there in groups of three to avoid attracting attention.

10.09.2018 - The smugglers demanded between €600 and €1,000 for the crossing.  70 litres of fuel, two cans of oil, a GPS device, waterproof suits, life jackets, bedding and cooking utensils were seized from the apartment.  A Senegalese man was arrested when he brought provisions for the crossing. The smugglers had tried to attract even more migrants for the crossing, up to the last minute.
