Lanzarote president calls a humanitarian emergency
Lanzarote's president Pedro San Ginés has proclaimed a humanitarian emergency on the island. The reason: the increasing number of underage immigrants, which has now risen to over 100. He criticised the Spanish central government for its refusal to make the Marqués de Herrera prison available temporarily and exceptionally as a hostel. "The Spanish government lacks sensitivity to the humanitarian crisis and the migration problem in the Canary Islands," he criticised. As an emergency solution and after negotiations with the operator, the La Santa hostel in Tinajo was therefore chosen as a temporary interim solution.
Tenerife's island president Carlos Alonso came to the aid of his colleague yesterday and offered to immediately take in and accommodate 30 of the minors in Tenerife.
