Abuse or an accident?


The court in Arrecife, Lanzarote, is currently a young couple, both under the age of 22 years, whose baby has been hospitalised twice. In the first case, 19 days after his birth, the newborn was taken to hospital with a broken thigh. The doctors suspected that the baby had either broken the leg between the bars of the cot or had been born with an air bubble in the leg that could have caused the fracture. In mid-November, the child was hospitalised again, this time with a fractured skull. The child's father and sister-in-law had looked after him while the mother was studying.
While trying to bottle feed him, the baby slipped out of his hand and fell to the ground. The child was temporarily placed in the care of the Child Welfare Office. The judge on duty has now declared that there was no confirmation that the parents were abusing the child and that the explanations were conclusive. Nevertheless, the judge wants to wait for the doctors' report before making a final decision. According to the parents, this is a very active baby
