Documentary film about migration
This evening at 7.30pm at the Patio del Cabildo in Las Palmas, Naufragio, a documentary about migration, will be shown. It describes 30 years of migration in Spain and documents the flight of numerous people since the first shipwreck of immigrants on November 1 1988 at Playa de Los Lances in Tarifa and the first on the Canary Islands, which took place in July 1999 at Playa de La Señora in Fuerteventura. The film denounces the poor immigration policy that drives refugees to increasingly dangerous routes. In the last 30 years, an estimated 25,000 people have lost their lives off the Spanish coast. They seek prosperity or flee from warlike conflicts or the exploitation of their homeland, like the refugees from Guinea Conakry, who make up 22 per cent of all immigrants seeking shelter in Spain.
Nicolás Castellano's film also criticises current politics. The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion in which Issa Sidibe will also take part. He is a survivor of a shipwreck off the coast of Fuerteventura in 2004. He talks about his life and how it has been in Spain since then.
