Nationwide fraud gang affected a Canarian
Following a complaint filed with the Guardia Civil in Peralta in Navarra, officers tracked down a gang of fraudsters who had cheated at least 33 people out of their money. The victim reported that eight times, sums of €500 were transferred from his account through a mobile to mobile system. A total of 33 victims were discovered throughout Spain plus a Canarian victim who lost €2,000. During Operation Picota, investigators discovered that the scammers were operating over 15 different e-mail accounts ending in cox.net, a server based in the USA. They contacted the victims and requested their username and password. If the victim did not respond, his account would be blocked. With this data and a mobile app that most banks use, they then withdrew their victims' money from their accounts.
