A sheep hike with Pepe from Cortijo de Pavón
José Mendoza is one of the last shepherds to follow the old tradition with their herds. In winter he lets his almost 600 sheep graze at the Presa de Las Niñas reservoir and in the Gegen Majada Alta. Now, in the spring, he returns home to the cheese dairy Cortijo de Pavón in Guia, a trip of 40 kilometres from Cruz de San Antonio to Altos de Guía. And he does it without GPS, with sticks over stones, as was always done. Due to the family tradition, the shepherd knows the way already from his childhood. After almost nine hours they reached their destination.
"This hike is a great sacrifice, because as a shepherd you are isolated from the rest of the world for a long time with your sheep. The loneliness is only interrupted by shopping or going to the cheese dairy to look after the other animals. "Nobody nowadays wants to be a shepherd anymore and make this sacrifice," he explains.
