Hiker found dead in La Gomera
On Wednesday, a young Frenchman was reported missing by his partner. The couple were on holiday in La Gomera and the 26-year-old wanted to go hiking in the Barranco Argaga near Valle Gran Rey. First, a group of firefighters, police officers, military and civil defence personnel, searched for the missing hiker, in vain. On Thursday morning, a Guardia Civil helicopter crew took off from the northern airport in Tenerife to help their colleagues in La Gomera with their search. Two officers from the Greim mountain rescue unit were also on board. First they flew over the most problematic part of the Barranco and could see nothing suspicious. After about 15 minutes they saw something blue flashing in the bushes near La Vizcaina. On approach it was confirmed that it was a human corpse. The two mountain police officers were roped down and they helped recover the lifeless body. The dead man was flown to San Sebastián airport, where the public prosecutor's office took over the case. An autopsy will now clarify the exact cause of his death.
