La Orotava's sand collector
For 27 years, José Manuel Alonso, who comes from La Orotava, has been the one who fetches the sand from the Teide National Park for the town's famous sand carpets. There are a total of 27 different colours, and Josito, as he is called, knows where to find them. Hardly anyone knows Mount Teide and the surrounding national park as well as he does. He not only brings the sand down to the town from a height of around 3,000 metres, but he is also part of the ArteArena association, which is responsible for designing the sand carpet. The carpet makers are currently working at full speed to create the 2019 Corpus Christi carpet. On June 27 for the big fiesta day, the work of art has to be finished. If you like, you can already watch the artists creating the carpet.
