Swiss woman dies in suspicious circumstances
On June 21, a 63-year-old Swiss woman was confirmed as having died in an apartment in Icod de los Vinos, in what may be yet another case of fatal domestic violence.
The woman’s 64-year-old husband called the police and the deceased was found lying on her bed in an apartment in Calle La Concepción in Icod de los Vinos, though she had been living in Camino Las Charnecas. The husband has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter due to gross negligence.
The results of the autopsy received on June 24 outlined that the woman showed various signs of historic injuries, including bruising to the head, face, neck, chest, abdomen and extremities. In addition, she showed signs of dehydration, malnutrition and anaemia.
If the accused is found guilty of causing the Swiss woman’s death, the case will be added to the already sad tally of women killed at the hands of their partners or ex-partners in the Canaries. Five such violent deaths have been recorded so far this year, with two still under investigation.
This makes the Canary Islands the current leader in domestic violence in Spain, ahead even of the capital, Madrid, where four women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners since January 1. However, to put that statistic into context, the Madrid metropolitan area has three times as many inhabitants as the Canary Islands.
