Exotic invasive plants seized at a garden centre

Following a tip from the public, the Guardia Civil Environmental Protection Unit, Seprona, became aware of the sale of potentially invasive plants. It is a white head mimosa, Leucaena Leucocephala, which is listed in the Spanish Invasive Species Catalogue and therefore cannot be sold. The officers first photographed the five plants offered at a garden centre in El Rosario and asked the Canary Islands Government Biodiversity Department to verify the suspicion. After this was confirmed and the trader could not show any permission to sell them, the plants were confiscated and the owner was reported. A violation of trading with invasive specimens of fauna and flora is punished as a serious violation with fines starting from €3,001.
