Federica's new home - Loro Parque
At Loro Parque the loggerhead sea turtle Federica was given a second chance. After she was found seriously injured on the Italian Adriatic coast after a boat collision, she was faced with euthanasia. The turtle's shell was deformed and her rear extremities are probably irreversibly paralysed after a spinal cord injury. As a result, the turtle lacks buoyancy. This impairment to swimming ability does not make them viable in nature and the reception centre in Italy is not suitable for permanent guests. Therefore Loro Parque offered to take in the otherwise healthy animal and to give her a new home with the Humboldt penguins. Here Federica can grow old as a turtle, despite her handicap.
