Forest fire in Gran Canaria
On Saturday afternoon, a 55-year-old man from Telde near Artenara, near Cruce de las Peñas in Gran Canaria, accidentally started a forest fire which has now devastated around 1,000 hectares of forest. The man had been doing some welding work in his house, and flying sparks triggered the fire. Around a thousand local residents from the small mountain villages in the communities of Artenara, Telde and Gáldar had to be evacuated, and they now fear for their homes. On Sunday night, a perimeter had been established, but the wind reignited several already controlled sources of fire. The firefighting work continues today. The Tenerife Island Council has sent reinforcements to Gran Canaria to help extinguish the fire. The flames illuminate the night sky and cause great fear among the evacuated residents who are wondering what else they will find if and when they are allowed to go home.
