1,500 hectares already burned in Gran Canaria
Over an area with a diameter of 23 kilometres, the flames have burned their way through the forests of Gran Canaria. Already 1,500 hectares are affected. An end to, or even only controlling the fire is not yet in sight. Yesterday, gusts of wind of up to 70 kilometres per hour and rising temperatures made extinguishing the fire even more difficult. From the air, 13 different fire-fighting aircraft and helicopters are in action to support the ground forces. Yesterday, the fire-fighting work concentrated mainly on the community of Artenara, which was the most threatened. At the end of the day, flames and smoke had disappeared, but there is no reason to breathe a sigh of relief yet. The fire is still neither under control nor extinguished. Strong winds could cause another flare up at any time. This is also shown by the new source of fire, which flared up at Los Cazadores around 10pm on Monday evening. With regard to the evacuees and their possible return to their homes, Canary Islands President Ángel Víctor Torres said that the experts' decision would be respected in order not to have to mourn human victims.
