Weekend forest fires
The green belts of the Canary Islands are suffocating in the flames. The situation is particularly dramatic in Gran Canaria, where the villagers of the mountainous regions who have just returned home had to be evacuated again on Saturday, together with more people from the north of the island. This second fire is much more serious than that of last week. At least 3,400 hectares of forest have been burned and about 5,000 people have been evacuated, in fact some reports put this figure at 8,000. 700 firefighters and 16 aircraft are working in shifts on the massive fire, and they are up against high temperatures and occasional strong winds which are hampering their efforts, as the flames are spreading across the tops of the trees. The Tamadaba Nature Park has already been breached by the flames.
Another fire broke out in the borough of Haría in Lanzarote on Sunday evening at around 8.45pm in the area of El Bosquecillo. In Tenerife, a fire that broke out in Vilaflor on Saturday was fortunately quickly brought under control.
