Gran Canaria fire stabilised
The Canary Islands president, Ángel Víctor Torres, reported that the fire in Gran Canarian which has burned 9,200 hectares of land, with a perimeter of 112 kilometres, is now stabilised, although a watch must be kept on it as there are hot areas which could flare up again at any time, in fact all it needs is a wind to reactivate a fire. Nevertheless he warned that the fire is still classified at Level 2 and said that firefighting continues on the ground and from the air. During Wednesday, almost a million litres of water were used on the area. At that time, almost 2,500 people who had been evacuiated, were still not allowed to go home. The most affected borough was Artenara, with almost 60 per cent of its territory burned.
Luckily, the Canarian pine trees are resilient, and usually, following a fire, they eventually start to grow again, recovering the green countryside.
