In memory of the forest fire victims
Representatives of La Gomera Island Council laid a wreath of flowers on Wednesday at Roque Agando and in the San Sebastián cemetery to commemorate the 20 deaths caused by a forest fire in La Gomera in 1984. At the time, 13 people from La Gomera, including Francisco Afonso, the then president of the island, and seven people from Tenerife fell victim to the flames which burned 900 hectares of forest. This was 35 years ago, but the tragedy is still deeply rooted in the memory of the Gomerans and has left a wound. Every year the dead are remembered with respect.
