Guardia Civil officers from the provincial maritime unit in Santa Cruz were on patrol when they discovered a loggerhead turtle off the coast of Playa de Las Gaviotas that could no longer swim because it was caught in a fishing net. They carefully approached the animal and cut open the net to make it easier to take on board. They noticed that she had parts of the net in her mouth, which made breathing difficult. Other parts of the net had also twisted around her fins. The animal was handed over by the officers to the Island Council wildlife sanctuary. |
