On Saturday, a large plastic collection campaign took place at Playa Martiánez in Puerto de la Cruz, in which dozens of volunteers participated. The event was organised as part of World Oceans Day by the the Loro Parque Foundation and the non-profit association Promemar. In addition, several turtles which had recovered from their injuries in the La Tahonilla wildlife sanctuary were released. Events such as these can be used to launch campaigns and raise awareness of the dangers that human activities pose to the oceans and their inhabitants. The main problem is garbage in the sea. According to the United Nations, 13,000,000 million tons of plastic waste end up in the oceans every year, killing 100,000 marine mammals and seabirds every year.
