The unusual weather patterns that have plagued the Canaries in recent months returned again at the week-end with conditions and temperatures more in keeping with northern European countries than the sunshine islands.

Canary Islands – 17.02.2014 – Temperatures plummeted below zero in many upland parts, where the snow made an unexpected return and forced the authorities to bring out the snow ploughs to clear roads. All access roads to Mt Teide have had to be closed due to the dangerous conditions and the picture was similar in Gran Canaria, where several high parts experienced their heaviest falls of snow for many years. In La Gomera, all the main roads crossing the island were closed for a time due to black ice. Gale force winds and heavy rain once again brought major problems in north Tenerife (where wind speeds exceeded 95 kmh on Saturday) and on La Palma and El Hierro, including the cancellation of ferry crossings and flights to and from the islands. Much of La Palma was hit by a power failure lasting two hours at the height of the stormy conditions. Fortunately, no serious incidents were reported on any of the islands, although a group of hikers had to be rescued in the Teide area after being caught out by the sudden change in weather. A snow plough was deployed to clear a path for an ambulance to reach the stranded party and collect two people who were suffering from exposure.
