A senior Spanish politician who is certain to be elected as an MEP on Sunday has called for the EU to fund a subsidised holiday scheme for the elderly to benefit year-round destinations such as the Canaries.

Canary Islands – 21.05.2014 – Ramón Jaúregui wants the Spanish Inserso scheme, which provides heavily-discounted vacations for the over-65s during low season in the country’s leading holiday regions (including the Canaries), to be extended by Brussels to include all pensioners in Europe. Speaking in Las Palmas, Jaúregui, who is No. 2 on the PSOE ticket for Sunday’s European Parliament elections and an influential figure in his party, says that the 80 million senior citizens in the EU at present are a vast untapped market for the Canaries and if even a fraction are able to take subsidised holidays it could help ensure hotels are filled at all times. He added that he and his party will lobby hard for an agreement among all EU member states to fund the holiday scheme.
